I have a sedentary job and lifestyle and so tend to spend many hours sitting in front of my PC. And my posture is usually horrible, so much so that after hours slumped in my chair, I can barely stand up. Knowing that a break timer is the simple answer to this simple problem I initially looked out across the Interweb for a timer that would do nothing more than remind me to take a break on occasion. Believe it or not, finding such a timer (and for free) proved to be difficult - so I decided to write my own.
Steph's Break Timer is the result and also represents the pinnacle of my programming career. Steph's Break Timer is a win32 app that runs in your system tray and simply and efficiently reminds you to take a break after a specified interval. I use it now to take a five minute stretch after each hour, so I've set my break timer for an hour and five minutes and have set it to play a sound and pop up when that time has passed. Deceptively small and lightweight (like me), Steph's Break Timer is nevertheless an ingenious and clever bit of programming magic. Plug in your name and Steph's Break Timer becomes YOUR Break Timer. (You could take credit for it!) Choose what sound you would like to play, what message you would like to see, at whatever level of familiarity you are comfortable addressing yourself with. Clicking the "x" on the timer actually minimizes it to your tray so you are less likely to inadvertently exit the application. Steph's Break Timer remembers all of your settings, and mousing over the tray icon pops up the time remaining.
Essentially Steph's Break Timer does one thing and does it super-extremely well. Steph's Break Timer plus a bottle of wine and some flowers would make a lovely gift for your significant other. And of course, Steph's Break Timer is spyware, adware, and virus free.
